What is Hospice?

The American hospice movement began in 1974 with the establishment of the Connecticut Hospice in New Haven. It was founded on the model of care developed by Dame Cicely Saunders, MD in England in 1967.

"You matter because you are you. You matter to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die."
- Cicely Saunders

Hospice care involves a team of trained volunteers in an approach tailored to help the patient and their family deal with life threatening illnesses.

Hospice's blend of compassion and skill helps the patient to:
  • Live each day with comfort and dignity
  • Retain control over their lives
  • Discover renewed meaning and purpose in life

All services are free of charge
